The Navy, Army, and Air Force Institutes (NAAFI) was formed in 1921 to provide food, recreation, and shops for the enlisted members of the British armed forces. NAAFI branches operate on bases and on naval ships, but NAAFI personnel are officially civilians. The NAAFI is not part of the armed forces itself, but a nonprofit organization operating under contract.
